When I was 12, my dad was diagnosed with terminal cancer, while my mother cared for him 24/7 I chose to escape the pain with alcohol. This could have been a disasterous path ,if not for the love of programs, school counselors and caring people in the community.
thanks so much for your comment, diane. i love the concept of this movement. i do most of my work with the underpinning of guiding the girls in my community thru those tough formative times. i am working with a non-profit, right now, to bring art into underserved communities of Oakland. its tough work to be in some of these neighborhoods, but i believe we all have these stories that break us open and if we're lucky allow for our ultimate growth and blossoming. it sounds like you were pretty lucky to have those people to support you when your mother couldn't. xoxo jul
